RV’ing Is A Lifestyle

Taking your RV for a long drive to a great destination is something that most RV owners dream of all year long. The open road can be a great place to unwind, soak in some scenery, and catch up with your traveling companions. Where some people count the miles until they will be done with their trip, RV owners tend to savor the miles instead, enjoying each one as it passes.

Of course, that doesn’t mean its always smooth sailing out there on the road. Things can happen when you take off on a long drive, especially in a large RV. Being prepared for a variety of circumstances is the smart and responsible thing to do. While that is true for any trip you take, it is especially important when you are going to be taking the ‘road less traveled’.

Wandering the Back Roads

There are more than 300 million people living in the United States. With that kind of population base, you might think that there would be nowhere to go in this country where you could get some peace and quiet. Oh but you would be wrong. There are many many miles of lonely roads all over this country – especially in the west. As you gain experience traveling around the country in your RV, you will find that there is still plenty of desolate lands to explore, even in a country with so many millions of residents.

If you are going to be traveling some of these ‘lonely’ roads on your next RV trip, be sure to prepare yourself for as many circumstances as possible. Some of these roads see very few travelers, and you will likely be well out of cell phone range when you get deep into the country. Anytime you head out into such remote territory in your RV, you should always be prepared to spend the night if absolutely necessary. Take food and plenty of water and comfortable clothing so you can get through a night safely if there is a problem with the RV along the way. Hopefully this situation will never come to pass, but you will enjoy your trip more thoroughly if you are prepared just in case.

Where are These Roads?

Still not convinced that there are desolate highways crisscrossing the country? You don’t have to look at a map for very long to find plenty of them. The state of Nevada alone is home to plenty of lonely stretches of highway, such as US-93 which runs north and south in the eastern half of the state. Leaving from the metropolis of Las Vegas on I-15 east, it doesn’t take long to find US-93N, which will quickly take you away from the bright lights of the strip out into the desert. While you will run into a few small towns along the way, there is very little along this highway of note – and you shouldn’t plan on seeing too many other cars on the road with you. Of course, this is just one example of the remote highways that can be explored throughout the western half of the country. These roads can lead to great vacations, but be sure you are prepared before setting off.

Electricians – Making sure you get as lucky as me!

Licensed Electricians Are Not Equal.

When it comes to choosing a certified electrician don’t let the following three letters on a business card fool you, “Lic.” Yes, knowing your electrical contractor is licensed is important but if that was all you needed to know when hiring an electrician, you would not be reading this right now.

I know it is not an easy task finding the right electrician or any other type of contractor for that manner. I recently was in your position, looking for a qualified electrician, and I needed one fast! Imagine this you’re sitting on your couch relaxing after a long week at work, it’s Saturday and sunny and everything is going great. You fall asleep, one of those great afternoon “cat naps,” you know the ones you don’t get near enough of, then it happens!

You go from peacefully sleeping to jumping straight up, running through a now dark house to find the cause of that massive explosion. Lighting, it’s a storm, it must have hit the house. You breathe a sigh of relief as you head to the breaker box knowing the house has not been directly hit. After flipping the breaker back on you assume you can return to your peaceful Saturday afternoon.

Russian Roulette, the phone book and Many Electricians

Well as you have guessed, my Saturday was ruined. I had power but the lighting had struck close enough to the house to travel back into my electrical system and phone lines via the grounding wire of the house. Telephones fried! My computers are now big paperweights and the only thing I can watch on TV is the reflection of me trying to turn it on! Off to the yellow pages and out with the cell phone.

I made a couple of calls and it was apparent I didn’t qualify as an emergency because I still had electrical power. So I ended up getting an appointment for first thing Monday morning from one of those companies that have a great looking “you know they pay a lot of money” type of ads. First thing Monday morning actually meant 1:30 pm Monday afternoon. The electrician shows up, oops I mean estimator, turns out all he actually does is write the estimates for the jobs it also turns out that he was a great talker but not such a good estimator. When the actually certified electricians from the company showed up to start doing the work well the estimate that I had signed was worth about as much as my recently deceased TV. The estimated price didn’t just go up once but every time the gentleman came up from the basement he had discovered a newer more expensive problem that HAD to be addressed. After politely asking these men to leave, it was back to the phonebook and more Russian, I mean electrician roulette. The following three interactions with other companies met with a similar fate each with a different twist…not showing up on time….not showing up at all…or the what must be a customary electrician excuse…” van/truck broke down on the way to your house.”

I starting to think I was in a hidden video reality show. However, my ignorance about all things electrical and a trip to a local home improvement store solved my electrician search. When I met Roger, I was trying to figure out what type of electrical switch I needed to replace one that was damaged. (Why I thought I could do this is beyond me) With no sales staff around I turned to the guy next to me and said, “do you know about this stuff?”

Twenty minutes later he had helped me pick out everything I need and actually showed me how to install it. As I was thanking him and wheeling my cart to the checkout counter I turned back and told him…” you know you should think about becoming an electrician.” His almost puzzled reply was, “I am a Master Electrician.”

Is It Cheaper To Run A Natural Gas Fireplace Or The Furnace?hat is the Meaning of Cheaper?

When you say cheaper, it is in comparison of gas with another fuel, which is obviously furnace in this context. The root meaning is saving on money, which is to get more heating from lesser fuel. You can consider the parameters like fireplace design, construction, materials, and the fuel consumption volume. It is obvious that you want to know how gas works cheaper than a furnace.

Efficient Gas Fireplace Design

The gas firebox is made of copper, steel, or other heat-conducting materials. So, it can get heated with a relatively lesser volume of fuel within a short time. The transmission rate of heat to the external environment is faster, efficient and consistent. So, you can save on gas.
Exteriors of the firebox could be made of ceramic, brick, or other insulating materials which prevent heat loss. Hence, the interiors of the gas fireplace get more heat due to reflection from the internal surfaces. It also helps in saving on fuel.
