The New York Times has an article and slideshow about the hipness of out-of-the-way Brooklyn venues. The article discloses a few tidbits that I did not know. Issue Project Room (pictured above) is leaving their space at the Gowanus Canal. MeanRed is taking the space over so I guess it will become a dance party venue. They have an outdoor concert series planned. Remember Turntables on the Hudson, try Turntables on the Gowanus. Also Todd P is no longer booking shows at Studio B. They name drop Silent Barn, Glasslands, Issue Project Room, Don Pedro’s and Monkey Town. They also name drop Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dan Deacon, and Deerhunter.

I think the article are missing the concert goer’s perspective. I would be interested to know how far people are willing to travel to see a show, if they are there to see a particular band or just because it is in the neighborhood, and if they feel more a part of a community since these venues are off the beaten path.

Guillemots Are Coming (but not by train)

I have not been able to find that much good information about the Guillemots. However, I can tell you that everybody in the band has an interesting name, they are based in London, the lead singer used to be a college music teacher, and they are named after a sea-faring pigeon. Fyfe Dangerfield sings and plays the keyboard, MC Lord Magrão plays guitar, Aristazabal Hawkes plays double bass and Rican Caol does percussion.

They make spectacular sing-along pop music. Check out these songs from the Trains to Brazil EP:

Of the Night is EP is on their website for free download until the end of the month. Get their mini album From the Cliffs when it comes out in the US on March 14th. The Guillemots are coming to SXSW and to the Mercury Lounge. I will be at the latter.
